THE TERROIR
Tokyo BORN
ISLAND SPIRITS
Out in the Pacific, a chain of wild islands belongs to Tokyo. Centuries back, these outposts took in exiles: criminals and outcasts sent far from the city. Each arrival changed the islands, mixing new blood, skills, and stories into places carved by volcanoes and swept by relentless ocean winds. ZAININ takes its name from this fierce legacy. On Hachijojima and Niijima, that unforgettable past lives on through a bold Shochu culture. Local ingredients, raw terroir, and generations of grit create spirits found nowhere else.
Shochu is Japan’s original spirit, distilled from barley, sweet potato, or rice and fermented with Koji. Every batch tells the story of where it’s from and what it’s made of.
ZAININ brings these rare island spirits into a new era. Each bottle is handcrafted from wild landscapes, histories, and the people who claimed them.

ABOUT
Spirits Rooted in the Islands
Forged in rain and salt air, the islands are shaped by warm weather and a history of exile. Today, four distilleries on Hachijojima and one on Niijima keep the island’s spirit alive, crafting Shochu that embodies the raw edge and soul of their lands.
ZAININ partners with island distillers who live and breathe Shochu. Master Distiller Okiyama of Sakashita Shuzo on Hachijojima and Master Distiller Miyahara of Niijima Shuzo Distillery help us bottle each island's raw spirit.
